Fit and proper requirements
Since 2023 all registered people must give the Board information about their fitness to practise when they renew their licence. This lets the Board keep protecting the health and safety of the public, and assures the public that licensed plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers are fit and proper persons to do their work.
Trainee information
If you are enrolled in the New Zealand Certificate at Level 4, you must hold an active limited certificate authorisation to do any restricted work during your apprenticeship. The Board issues these authorisations to trainee plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers each year.
Licence cards
Your licence card is virtual and lives in the PGDB app, free on Apple or Android. You can order a physical card for $4.50 incl GST in the Trade Login.
Licence card design. The back of the card lists your authorisations. The Board's logo design corresponds to the trade. The drainlaying trade appears as a circle. This is intentional and does not relate to specific licences.
Lost licence cards. To replace a licence card we need to see acceptable identification to confirm your identity. Contact licensing@pgdb.co.nz, or fill out the lost card declaration.
Maintaining public register details
Registered tradespeople are responsible for keeping their details correct. The public register is a legal requirement under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006.
- The public register lets people check if a person is registered and holds a current licence to do work.
- Your public register page shows your name, current licences, registration history, licensing history, any disciplinary action, and any cancellation or suspension of your registration or practising licence.
- If you are a Certifier, the people you supervise are also listed on your page: exemptions under supervision, trainee limited certificates, restricted, plumbers, gasfitters, drainlayers and provisional licence holders.
- Under section 76 of the Act you must tell the Board within 3 months if your address, email or phone number changes. Update these details by logging into your online account.
- If your name changes you must tell the Board within 1 month. Complete the declaration for amendment of name on register and return it to the Board.
